RE: Labor Day Travel Advice - Avoid downtown Atlanta

BTW, we never go through Atlanta when traveling to a campground. We choose the back roads even though it means a long trip.
To each his own. I'd rather take the shorter route and spend that extra time sipping a cold one at the campground myself.

Just a bump. I figure a lot of folks will be finalizing travel plans tonight and possibly leaving tomorrow.

RE: Labor Day Travel Advice - Avoid downtown Atlanta

If you are going north or south, get off well north or south of town and take US27, you may go a litle slower through small towns but at least you will be moving and not creeping through traffic. I have worked in and lived near Atlanta for 14 years, it is a traffic toilet.
Chris
There's no need to do that. The congestion has been (and will continue to be) confined to the downtown area on the weekends during the whole construction period. I, for one, wouldn't spend an extra hour (probably a lot more) to get off on 27 or any other route when 285 will serve you just fine.

RE: Labor Day Travel Advice - Avoid downtown Atlanta

I have even better advice, avoid Atlanta altogether!
Works for me. I live around here (and love it BTW) and the less folks travelling through the area the better off I am.

Labor Day Travel Advice - Avoid downtown Atlanta

I looked for a thread on this topic but didn't find one.
I just wanted pass on a word of warning with regard to planning your travel route through the Atlanta area on Labor Day weekend. Georgia DOT is continuing their work on repaving/building on the downtown connector (which has made it a mess). And on Labor Day weekend, they have taken the 3 day weekend to try and knock out as much stuff as possible (cramming 6 weekends of work in 1 weekend). That means a LOT of lane closures and a LOT of potential backups. Add in the Clemson-Alabama game at the GA Dome on Sat and I think the Falcons play as well on Sun (could be wrong on that one) and you will have extra traffic downtown in an area that will have have probably 1/2 to 2/3's the normal amount of capacity. Plus, I am sure there are other activities scheduled as well. Its not going to be a pretty sight I guarantee.
Normally, I am one to recommend going straight through downtown Atlanta on I-75 or I-85 as opposed to taking I-285 around. Not so on Labor Day weekend. AVOID DOWNTOWN AT ALL COSTS!!
Take I-285 around and don't take a chance going through the city. I do not believe this will affect I-285 other than a little extra traffic nor anything outside the I-285 loop (aka the Perimeter). And, 285 will easily be able to accomodate any diverted traffic on the weekend. If you head downtown travelling through, I guarantee you will regret that decision any time after 8-9pm Fri and before 6am on Monday.
Travel safe and have a Happy Labor Day!

RE: Headlight Adjustment on Winnebago Chieftain

Screw them in to tilt towards the screw. Unscrew them to tilt away from the screw. Basically the screw controls the depth of that side of the light. By moving the screw in or out, you are swiveling the light left and right or up and down.

RE: Great Service in Marietta Georgia

ThreeWay is GREAT. I've had them do various things to my Winnebago and I use their parts department a lot on things. They've always bent over backwards to help and I've never had a problem with anything they've done. They don't do chassis work. But, they do a nice job on the other stuff.

RE: North Georgia State Parks Full hookups?

While Hart State Park is not what I consider North Georgia, they do have 4-5 full hookup sites. We thought it was a nice park.
Anything north of the gnat line is north GA to some of us. Others draw that line at Atlanta. While Hart State Park isn't the north GA MOUNTAINS, but it most certainly is in north GA.

RE: Early Parking for Topsail

have you ever stayed at Topsail in late Feb? How is the weather at that time of the year?
Its not "hang out at the beach" weather. I'd expect low/mid 60's for a high and low's in the 40's. Water temps in the mid 60's. It COULD be warmer than that. But, it could also dip colder.

RE: North Georgia State Parks Full hookups?

I know that some of the GA parks do have grey water dumps scattered around the park. For example, Hart State Park is set up this way. You won't have a gray water dump on your site. But, you might have one next to you or down just a couple of sites away. If you took a regular hose with you, you may be able to use that hose to dump just your gray in the gray water dumps. You'll have to check each park though and pick a site close enough to a gray water dump in order for it to work. Unfortunately, I don't think they show these on their campground maps so you may have to talk to the park. Or just take a blue tote and empty it daily using those same gray water dumps or the regular dump. I don't know what all parks have the gray water dumps, though.
Then, just dump your black at the regular dump station when you leave.

RE: Site question at St Andrews

Just a quick check...
You do realize that Panama City in Dec is not going to be beach weather, right? I just want you to realize that it will be a LOT warmer than NY. But, it can still be a bit chilly that time of year. I wouldn't expect to be hanging out on the beach in my swimsuit and playing in the water.
Anyhow, I'm not trying to dampen your enthusiasm - just making sure you knew.

RE: GA 20 around Atlanta

I would not recommend it. GA 20 on the northside of town can be VERY congested. Even down in the McDonough area, things have gotten pretty built up. I think you would be SO much better off to just plan to go through Atlanta on the interstate during off hours. Your nerves would be pretty frazzled with all the stop and go. I figure it would take you 3 hours to go via GA 20 vs the interstate. If you really really want to avoid the interstate, your better bet is to get on hwy 41 and just drive straight through Atlanta. It will be congested, but its no worse than GA 20 and it will be much shorter. You'll even go right by the GA Dome near downtown.
Really, though, just take the interstate and plan to hit the south edge of Atlanta (McDonough area) before 6:30am, between 9am and 2:30, or after 6pm.

RE: Gas millage for a GM 454 engine ( Miles per Gallon)

I have a 90 Winnebago (31 footer) with a TBI 454. I get 6.5-7 and I generally run around 65MPH. That was the last long trip I took hauling our Maxima as a tow car (on a dolly). I bet you could get over 7 if you run 55.

RE: Why did you purchase a gas Class A?

I bought a gasser because that's what I could afford back in 2001 when I bought it. I do know that I'll never get another. But, I'll be driving this one til I can finally afford what I want. And, the next coach will be a diesel pusher. I hate the front engine configuration. I've re-insulated and done other things and while its better, its too noisy. The noise wears me down on any trip we take.

RE: no water from the rear tank

I have 2 tanks in my 90 Winnebago. They are (or were anyhow before I moved them) located under each bench seat for the dinette. The only thing connecting them was a t-junction. They both gravity fed the pump (and each other). They would equalize as they drained as well (via a tube that connected them). So, it was never possible to have one full and the other not.
I am guessing (and it is a guess) that the line from the rear tank may be clogged, kinked, or is being compressed. When you fill the tanks, does this one get more water? Also, you might want to try and disconnect the line at the t-junction and see if any water comes out (be prepared if it does). And, if none does, then you might want to see if you can blow some air down the line and loosen the clog or see if the rear tank bubbles.

At least they are still earning a profit!
Exactly! If they can earn a profit in this kind of economy, then they are in good shape.

RE: Best route through Atlanta?

We go from Jacksonville Florida to Kentucky, every year for the last 5 years and have been afraid to go through Atlanta. I don't mind getting caught in traffic but I hear the traffic is going 75 miles an hour. We are such wimps we go all the way over to I65 and go through Birmingham. Is this true? We could save time and mileage if we get the nerve to try Atlanta.
Its not worth that kind of bypass, IMO. Yes, a lot of folks do drive 75. But, through downtown its not that fast generally speaking. Just plan to go through between 10 and 3 during the day, after 7 in the evening, or before 7 in the morning, and you'll be fine. Its really just not worth avoiding. I think your anticipation of what might happen will be far worse than the actual experience.

RE: Campgrounds and attractions for Georgia & Florida?

If your going to Savannah take a drive out to Tybee Island. The lighthouse out there is fascinating and there is an old Fort as well(the name escapes me).
I agree. I'd head to Tybee. Also, that fort is Fort Pulaski. Its a pretty neat place. My only advice is to make sure you take some bug repellant. Every time I've stopped, the mosquitos have left me anemic from the loss of blood.
Also, if you are heading up the GA coast, I'd consider staying at Jekyll Island Campground. That's a very nice campground and Jekyll Island is a great place with a nice beach - its very residential and undeveloped. If you want to play golf, they have some nice courses as well. Also, its a very bike friendly area.

RE: Best route through Atlanta?

I live in Marietta and head downtown on a regular basis (and used to work down there). If you are coming 85 from the north (ie N Car or S Car), then I'd go in to town at that time of day and skip 285. It'll be much faster.
There is construction downtown but its pretty limited. Coming down 85, you won't be affected that much - especially if you stay in the left lanes for a mile or 2 after 75/85 join. It really affects the folks on 75 moreso and you'll have about 1/2-1 mile (max) to worry about (and its not a big worry). PLus, they are only doing construction work that affects the interstate traffic on the weekends to avoid causing weekday traffic issues. Once you get to North Ave, then move to the right and get to the right lanes for the I-20 exit (make sure you don't get over to the far right lanes too fast, though).

RE: Update info on Topsail Hill Campground in FL

I'm interested in where the better beaches are than topsail in Florida...? Not really being sarcastic. I really would like to know where my family can go camp in FL that has as nice of beach and access?
St Andrews is pretty decent. And, Grayton Beach was rated the top beach in the country in 1994. Its access is comparable (1/2 - 3/4 mile from the campground to the beach).
That's just 2 that I've been through. And, I've been to Topsail as well. I actually like Grayton a little better than Topsail. With a little bit of money, Grayon could be spectacular.
